1. Bad weather
Road construction is an outdoor job. Hence, workers are exposed to the force of the environment. They have to endure bad weather, including heavy rainfall, cold weather, snow, and a lot more. One solution to this is for them to wear the right outfit. They have to wear gloves, jackets, and warmers to manage cold weather.
2. Fall and impacts
There is always the possibility of tools, items, and materials falling while on construction sites. Commonly, these objects fall on workers’ feet. With this, it is highly advisable to require all workers to wear steel-toe boots. This will also ensure their protection from other materials on the site.
3. Poor visibility
It is difficult for cars to take notice of workers. The government requires workers to wear Class 2 or 3 hi-vis clothing. Meanwhile, those who control the traffic and signal drivers must wear highly reflective vests. Aside from these, workers can wear hi-vis shirts, jackets, or even pants.
4. Poor handling of materials
Construction work requires handling several materials. These materials range from big, heavy loads to small and light objects. Poor handling of any kind of material can lead to accidents and injuries. Make sure to properly store and move these materials in their appropriate location on the construction site. Handling materials can be done by hand or with the assistance of machinery. If done by hand, wear the appropriate protective wear that can help you safely move the materials.
5. Extreme heat
Road construction work almost always occurs under the blazing heat of the sun. The asphalt absorbs this heat, which it reflects into the atmosphere. In this process, the conditions for the construction work can become a hazard to the workers’ health. Workers should wear moisture-wicking fabric.
6. Dangerous chemicals
There are various chemicals or compounds used for construction. These include asbestos, lead, mercury, and polychlorinated biphenyl, among other hazardous substances. Exposure to these chemicals can be prevented by wearing chemical-resistant gloves, clothing, and headwear.
7. Fast-moving cars
Given the nature of the job, workers are exposed to fast-moving cars using the other side or part of the road. This problem can be remedied by installing signal signs as well as assigning flaggers to slow down and control traffic. Also, contractors can opt to install barriers to further protect the workers from speedy cars.
8. Sharp and pointy objects
Road construction workers come into contact with sharp and pointy materials on a regular basis. These objects come from construction debris such as small metal chips and splinters or construction materials like rebars with a rough or pointy surface. Wear protective gear such as high puncture-rated gloves and overalls to prevent hand and body injuries from cuts and puncture wounds.
