What are the Roles of Excavating Contractors in a Construction Project?

In the construction industry, excavating contractors play major roles in the completion of any project. This is why they are in demand in this industry.

Unlike what many people would think, an excavating company does more things than just hauling dirt around.

In this article, we will be highlighting the different roles and responsibilities of excavating contractors. Whether you are planning to get into this field or you just want to understand the other things that they do in a construction project, you’ll surely find this information useful.

1. Site Preparation

After the surveying crew finalizes the boundaries of the project, excavation contractors are next to show up.

Their job is to prepare the site by digging up the soil to a depth required by the new foundation. Moreover, they make sure that the soil is firm enough for construction. They test the soil through compaction tests if necessary.

When the contractor for the foundation finishes the stem wall and footers, the excavating contractor will then have to backfill around the new foundation.

2. Obtaining Permits

For every excavation job, a permit must be secured from the state or local administration before it can push through. The excavating contractor should also be able to obtain that permit.

3. Digging and Moving Dirt Around

If moving dirt is required for a construction project, the excavating contractor is the one to call. They are also capable in building and grading roadways, digging sewers or pools, and even create drainage and dams.

4. Provide Operators and Heavy Equipment

Excavating equipment can be really expensive. Excavating contractors usually lease or own all the equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, compactors, trenchers and front loaders. Also, since they have all these huge equipment, they typically hire skilled operators for them.
