Why Asphalt Can’t be Paved in the Rain

From time to time, you will be needing to repair your old asphalt pavement. When you are new
with all the process in paving and repairing, you might be wondering about the details in the
installation of paving surfaces.

One of the most frequently asked questions from property owners is to know whether it’s
possible to pave asphalt on surfaces even when it rains. While the answer to it is apparently
obvious, we will still get to the reasons why it is not advisable to pave when raining. Continue
reading and learn more about the reason why it is not a good practice to pave asphalt in the
rain.

We are all aware that all outdoor work and operations come to a halt when raining starts.
There are some states that prohibit contractors to stop operations when it starts to rain. They
have laws and regulations stating this. On the other hand, some contractors may continue
depending on their own discretion and reasons.

The industrially accepted general standard ruling is to avoid paving in the rain regardless of the
rain’s strength.

The following are the reasons why it is not recommended to pave when it rains.

 Moisture can affect the compact properties of asphalt. It will in turn decrease the stability
and longevity of the installation of asphalt pavement.

 The aggregate mix for the asphalt pavement cools down quickly when paving in the rain.

 If water becomes present in the asphalt mix, there could be steam later on. Steam is not
good for the asphalt pavement. Asphalt binder tends to be separated from the aggregate
due to steam. This will result to visible premature deformation and defects like cracking
and potholes.

There are plenty of factors to consider when asphalt paving. It may require an inventory of
equipment and credible pavers to do the job. Call us now at Eagle Rock Excavating and leave
