What Happens When You Install Asphalt Paving On Top of Concrete

Do you have a parking lot or driveway made of concrete that needs to be repaired? Or
do you just want to switch to asphalt paving? If you answered yes to any or both of the
questions then you have probably been thinking if it’s okay to have asphalt paving over
your existing concrete pavement.

While it is safe to pave asphalt over concrete, you need to be aware of some factors to
consider and that there can be potential side effects in doing this. Continue reading
about some useful insights when thinking over laying asphalt over concrete.

 Concrete is an effective base material as it can be very stable and it can also
allow for excellent compaction of the asphalt to be laid above it. It is no secret
that most of our concrete roads are paved over with asphalt.

 Concrete is used primarily to stabilize unstable ground. If the base of the
concrete is unstable, do note that once they crack at the expansion joints, the
slabs can pivot slightly. If the concrete pavement moves, over time, the asphalt
overlay can be damaged

 You need to be aware that concrete has expansion joints. In time, the expansion
joints will make the concrete surface to shift and cracks may appear. If there are
cracks on the concrete, then eventually, there will be cracks on the asphalt as
well.

To reduce the chance of these from happening, you need to be able to:
 Make sure to have a stable concrete surface, clear from any shifting expansion
joints as this will be the base for overlay.

 Conduct regular maintenance of your asphalt paving. Apply sealcoating or
crackfilling for any reflective cracks. This will ensure that water won’t seep into
the pavement and cause more problems.
