Get to Know the Right Type of Asphalt Mix

Before we hand over our driveway or parking lot paving to the professionals, we should at least familiarize ourselves with its details. One way to do this is by identifying the right type of asphalt to be used for our pavements.

Asphalt is widely used for pavements because of its versatility. It can be used in varied applications such as roads, parking lots, driveways, airport runways and many more.

Did you know that each different application may also require a specific asphalt mix?

Read on and learn about the different types of asphalt mix and decide for the most appropriate one for your next paving job.

  1. Porous Asphalt

This type of asphalt is used in paving parking lots as it enables water to drain through its surface. Although it can be the most expensive type of asphalt, using it could save you a lot compared to using other storm management solutions.

If you’re worried about having floods in your property, you can use this mix and install stone beds beneath the asphalt to permit water to slowly settle to the ground.

  1. Hot Mix Asphalt

Hot mix asphalt is characterized by its neat finished look. Aside from its appearance, it can also be highly durable making it an excellent choice for your driveway.

It also winter-proofs your pavement as the mix has nearly zero moisture. Freezing and thawing during winter won’t affect your pavement.  On the plus side, this type of mix is inexpensive and requires low maintenance.

  1. Warm Mix Asphalt

This type of asphalt mix is basically an eco-friendly version of the hot mix asphalt. As the name suggests, the temperature requirement for this type is lower than that of the hot mix.

  1. Perpetual Pavement

This asphalt design is called “perpetual” for a reason. The idea with this type is to combine different types of asphalt to guarantee a very long lifespan. It is designed in such a way that the bottom layer is flexible to avoid cracks, the middle layer is durable enough and the top layer is usually made of hot mix asphalt for it to be resistant to ruts.

This is an excellent option for roadways and surfaces that are often exposed to heavy loads.
